There are more rats running around Metro this year than usual. Pest experts say our mild spring could have contributed to a boost in the population and are warning residents to be vigilant in order to keep the vermin out of homes and apartments.
Don McCarthy with Braemar Pest Control says the rat population ebbs and flows depending on the severity of the weather. “It depends on the number of young that survive, if they are able to survive through last winter,” he says.
He says, right now, he’s been getting calls from people who have seen rats outside. But McCarthy warns as soon as the autumn arrives, those same rats, who are now in prime breeding season, will be looking for indoor places to hide.
“We’re expecting that this may be a bumper year for them into people’s homes,” he says.
The advice to keep your home as rat-proof as possible is to clean your yard, cut the grass and fill any cracks or gaps in the foundation or outer walls.
