Charges pending following violent weekend at Burnside jail

The stabbing of a guard at the Burnside jail will likely mean charges for the inmate accused of wielding the knife.
It was the second incident in a weekend that also saw a guard assaulted on Friday.
Halifax Regional Police Sergeant Bill Morris tells CTV the inmate accused in the stabbing will likely find himself in a courtroom today.
“At this present time we suspect that the person will be attending court on Monday to face charges,” Morris said.
Police say the guard was stabbed in the abdomen before being taken to Dartmouth General Hospital to be treated and released.
The stabbing is the latest in a string of incidents at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility. On Friday a guard was attacked by an inmate.
In early July an inmate was stabbed during a prison brawl, and another stabbing took place in June during a riot that also saw jail property destroyed.
Justice Department spokesperson Jennifer Gavin says her department will take a hard look at the latest stabbing.
“In any incident such as this we always do conduct internal investigations as well,” she said. “We would take internal action as well as whether there is any criminal action that would be taken as well.”
There’s no word on whether Friday’s attack will result in charges.
