Winter parking ban sparks heated debate

The HRM winter parking ban comes into effect on Wednesday, December 15th, but it’s already drawing fire from News 95.7 listeners.
Halifax Police Superintendent Cliff Falkenham told The Rick Howe Show, the ban will happen and it will be enforced.
“After December 15th, you won’t be able to park your vehicle on the street between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.,” he says “So you’ll need to find alternate parking for your vehicle.”
Without alternate parking, drivers will be hit with a $50 ticket. If it’s not paid within 60 days, that ticket amount rises to more than $80.
Downtown Councillor Dawn Sloane is angry that the ban hasn’t been changed. She’s been fighting it for years.
“I have no idea why they want to implement it on the 15th if we do not have a heavy snow until after that,” says Sloane on The Rick Howe Show, adding “I don’t understand why they are trying to cripple the downtown and that’s exactly what they do.”
Sloane says it looks like a cash grab to her.
Many listeners agreed.
“You go downtown and it’s plus 10 there’s no snow, where are the snow plows? There’s no snow!” said one male listener.
Some agreed there is a safety issue when there is snow on the ground, but many said the city should be more lenient when the weather is nicer.
