City staff asked to explore cost-cutting options

Halifax Regional Council has asked staff to find ways to reduce the city’s $13.9 million shortfall.
Councillors say service cuts, increased taxes and staff layoffs are still possible – but layoffs are doubtful.
A lengthy closed-door session was held Tuesday to discuss personnel issues.
Coun. Steve Adams tells the Herald he can’t see staff cuts happening but says some service levels could be changed.
Mayor Peter Kelly has said he won’t support raising taxes, and says staff was instructed to look at opportunites to find greater efficiences within the operation or consider alternative service delivery.
City hall staff will report back in January with alternatives and a draft budget will be provided for debate.
