Canada Games tickets selling well, despite misconceptions about cost

Canada Games organizers still have about 40 per cent of their ticket sale goals to be met, with the first events just days away.
Sales are going well and prices are reasonable, but residents going about their business in Halifax on Monday all gave the same reason for their decision not to pick up a ticket.
“With all the venues that are going on, it gets to be a little expensive after a while,” said one woman. “Most of us don’t have that kind of money to spend.”
“I’m not sure I can afford it,” said another man.
Canada Games spokesperson Melissa McKinnon says the tickets are actually a great deal.
“You can get a boxing ticket for $8, and a lot of our events are free,” she said. “We wanted to make sure that price wasn’t a deterrent for people.”
Quite a few people said they were planning to get out of town for the two-week long spring break, but one mother said she’d be sure to take in a few events.
“”I plan to go see the synchronized swimming, I have a baby and I know the weather will be good there,” she said. “Hopefully the gymnastics as well. I’d love to see the speed skating, but I don’t think I’ll be the only one, so I may not give it a shot.”
McKinnon says, thanks to enthusiasts like that, tickets sales for some events have been brisk.
“The medal rounds of curling have been sold out for a while,” she said. “We’re about 300 tickets short of selling out for the men’s gold medal hockey game.”
Organizers have a goal of $1 million in ticket sales by the end of the Games, and have reached $650,000 so far, ahead of projections.
The Canada Games opening ceremonies will be held Friday evening. Tickets for all events can be found on the Canada Games website.
