Masked men rob, beat victims in Fairview attack

Halifax police are investigating an assault and robbery in the Fairview area.
Around 8:45 p.m. Sunday, two men in their early twenties were walking near Willet Street and Main Avenue when they were approached by four men with bandanas covering their faces.
The group asked for a cigarette from the men. When they said they didn’t have any the suspects demanded they empty their pockets.
The men handed over their wallets and an iPod – and were rewarded for their compliance with a beating from a suspect carrying a baseball bat.
“They obtained whatever theses guys had in their pockets and then decided to assault them anyway,” said Halifax Regional Police Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs.
McCoombs says the victims made their own way to the QEII for treatment.
“They’re fine, they had minor injuries,” he said. “They were treated in hospital and released.”
McCoombs says there are steps you can take to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
“Always be cautious of your surroundings. If you think you’re near people that you think are suspicious try to get away from them as fast as you can,” he said. “If you have to, draw some attention to yourself by yelling or whatever it is you have to do to maybe draw some witnesses.”
The four attackers are described only as white males. One had a white jacket; the others were dressed in dark clothing.
