Dziekanski Mountie case in court

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A hearing in Surrey on Monday will find whether there is enough evidence to put a Mountie, charged with obstruction, to trial. Corporal Benjamin “Monty” Robinson pleaded not guilty last year.
His charge is connected to a 2008 crash between him and 21-year-old Orion Hutchinson, who was killed in the incident.
According to a coroner’s report, Robinson was drunk at the time. Impaired driving and dangerous driving charges were thrown out due to lack of evidence. The obstruction charges stem from actions Robinson is accused of taking after the accident. He left the accident scene and he claims he had a stiff drink at home, before returning.
Outside provincial court today there was a small gathering of people who were there to support the Hutchinson family. They were holding signs that said ‘Man up Monty.’
“Monty chickened out right away and ran from the scene, instead of trying to help the kid who had been hurt. But never mind that, he [Robinson] had his kids in the car and now he’s hiding behind the system,” said a man named Ian.
Robinson was suspended with pay. He was also the senior officer the night Robert Dziekanski was Tasered at YVR.
