New deal for ER doctors includes 21 per cent raise

Emergency room doctors in Halifax will get a hefty raise under a new agreement with the province.
The three-year deal pays doctors $190 per hour retroactive to April 1, an increase of 21 per cent over the previous hourly rate of $156 an hour.
The Herald reports the rate climbs to $192 in the second year, but hasn’t been negotiated for the third.
Angela Purcell of the Health Department says the raise is a lot more than the one per cent offered to other public workers, but it was necessary to make the rates competitive with other provinces.
The new deal also provides more hours of physician coverage at the Infirmary and IWK.
The package will cost the province about $1.8 million over three years.
