School board should reconsider cutting librarian positions: report

A report says Nova Scotia’s Chignecto-Central Regional School Board should reconsider laying off all of its librarians.
Senior Treasury Board adviser Doug Stewart outlined a series of options totalling $1.63 million in alternate savings that could save at least some of the 41 librarian positions at the board.
Stewart says they include looking at class sizes, the number of teachers and teaching assistants and reducing supports to some programs including in-school suspensions.
The provincial government launched the review two weeks ago in response to cuts that Premier Darrell Dexter said were calculated to “embarrass” the government.
But Stewart found that in general, the board’s decisions were “reasonable and understandable” in the face of declining enrolment.
Stewart also says the board made “concerted efforts” to protect the classroom and target administrative savings.
He says the board also expressed frustration at a lack of communication from the government.
