Cats die in apartment fire

Residents of a north-end Halifax apartment building were forced from their home Thursday evening by a grease fire which killed two cats.
Fire crews arrived at the walk-up, at Columbus and Robie streets around 7 p.m. to find the second-floor unit’s kitchen engulfed in flames.
“The fire was caused by a pan of fat left unattended on the stove,” platoon chief Bryson Wilson told News 95.7. “We certainly are always encouraging people to use the new fryers and to discourage this use.”
The fire was knocked down within five minutes. The fire was contained to the kitchen, which was extensively damaged. There was smoke and water damage to the first- and third-floor apartments as well.
Wilson said all the residents were asked to leave overnight and as off early Friday morning, they had not been allowed to return.
“Residents were actually asked not to stay in the house last night, just because of the smoke residue and to allow electricians to come in today, because water went through the wiring in the rest of the building,” said Wilson.
Two family cats died, but there were no other injuries.
