RCMP move into new N.S. headquarters almost complete

Nova Scotia mounties have nearly completed the move into their new provincial headquarters.
The RCMP’s new $113 million building on Garland Avenue in the Burnside Industrial Park will bring a number of different units and 500 officers under one roof.
RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae says ultimately it will make day-to-day operations more efficient.
“The former building, which everybody knows is on Oxford Street, basically was at the end of its useful life and no longer met the operational needs of the RCMP,” explained MacRae.
As for the Oxford Street building, MacRae says the fate of the 30-year-old structure is undecided at this point.
“That will be up to the RCMP and Public Works to determine what will happen to that building,” said MacRae.
The environment was a major consideration in the construction on the new building. The new facility has met the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold standard, making it one of the greenest government buildings in Canada.
That includes features like a green roof, dimming fixtures that adjust to natural light and use of natural gas.
The move is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.
