Last curtain call for Empire Theatres

The show is over for Empire Theatres as Cineplex takes over all 24 locations in Atlantic Canada this week.

Tuesday night marked the final movie screenings under the Empire name.

Mike Langdon, director of communications for Cineplex, says movie-goers will notice some changes but traditions like cheap Tuesdays aren’t going anywhere and ticket prices will remain the same for the forseeable future.

“Our goal is really to build on what they’ve done and expand the experience,” said Langdon.

In addition to the Cineplex loyalty card program which rewards frequent movie goers, Langdon said the range of entertainment offered at its theatres will exceed what Empire offered.

“‘Front Row Centre’ events are non-Hollywood entertainment that we bring to the big screen, so from Met Opera to the National Theatre Live to all sorts of classic movies,” said Langdon.

Langdon says Cineplex also plans to maintain the vintage look of Halifax’s iconic, single-screen Oxford Theatre on Quinpool Road.

“We’re actually planning to continue operating the Oxford as an art house with art house programming and our guests have told us that’s something they really enjoy and we’re planning to keep it up.”

While closed today, some theatres will re-open under the Cineplex banner as early as tomorrow, with the remaining theatres open for business on Friday.

Cineplex is Canada’s biggest movie chain. The company paid $200 million for Empire’s 24 theatres in Atlantic Canada and two in Ontario.
