Halifax International Airport Authority watching privatization suggestion closely

HALIFAX – Media reports say the Federal Government may be looking at privatizing some of the country’s largest airports in an effort to raise funds for its lofty infrastructure goals, which is something those at Halifax’s Stanfield International Airport are watching closely.
The privatization was suggested in a report reviewing transportation in Canada that claimed turning airports into for-profits would boost competitiveness as right now, Canadian airports are federally-owned and are run by the aiport authorities, which are not-for-profit.
Spokesperson for the Halifax International Airport Authority Peter Spurway tells News 95.7 that the current model is a good one that has worked for years for the most part, but the airport is working with others to review the report to see if changes can be made.
“We see some areas that may need some tweaking, but at least at this point we think the current airport model is a good one,” he said, but did add that it is time for the area to be reviewed. “It’s 20 years old, it is time for another look.”
Spurway says HIAA has an internal group working on looking at the report and as such doesn’t yet have a position on the idea of privatization.
