Mooseheads return to winning ways downing Charlottetown

Halifax welcomed the Charlottetown Islanders to the Scotiabank Centre on Sunday.

The Herd aimed to earn a win after last night’s overtime loss to the Cape Breton Eagles. This was the third meeting between the two teams, with the Mooseheads winning the first game and the Islanders claiming the second.

Matthis Rousseau started for the Mooseheads, while Donald Hickey got the nod for Charlottetown.

Shawn Carrier left the Moosehead bench less than 10 minutes into the contest with a reported upper-body injury. Carrier is 1st on the Mooseheads in points with 13 after joining the Herd this past offseason from the Moncton Wildcats.

The first period ended scoreless but with multiple scoring chances for both teams. The scoreless draw wouldn’t last long into the 2nd period when Logan Crosby struck first for the Herd 48 seconds in, redirecting Eddy Doyle’s point shot past Hickey’s glove.

Jack Martin buried a shot through traffic and into the Islander net 8:01 into the second period and was immediately reviewed for possible goaltender interference on Braedon MacPhee. The goal stood, giving Martin his second of the year and the Mooseheads a 2-0 lead. Liam Kilfoil added to the Moosehead lead 16:37 into the third period.

Charlottetown scored their first of the game 3:09 into the third period on the powerplay as Marcus Kearsey found an open lane and fired one past Rousseau, assisted by Simon Hughes and Alexis Michaud. Marcus Kearsey continued to add pressure as he scored another goal 3 minutes later, decreasing the Islanders’ deficit to one with 13:06 left in the third period.

Mooseheads Defenseman Dominic Mackenzie was on the receiving end of a dangerous hit by Kyle Powers into the boards. Mackenzie was able to get back to the bench with help from the Mooseheads athletic therapist and Powers would head to the penalty box for 2 minutes for cross-checking 16:28 into the third period

Charlottetown pulled their goalie with about a minute left in the game, the Islanders’ comeback was not to be as Liam Kilfoil took advantage of the empty net netting his second of the game with 21 seconds left in the game.

Matthis Rousseau picked up his sixth win of the season, as the Mooseheads defeated the Islanders 4-2. Earning the win on beloved mascot Hal’s birthday. Logan Crosby earned 1st star with the opening goal and an assist. Carlos Handel took 2nd star and Liam Kilfoil got 3rd.

The Mooseheads will head to Quebec next weekend as they begin their first Quebec road trip of the year. The Herd begin the trip Friday, Oct 25th as they visit Shawinigan. Puck drop is 8:00 p.m., and you will be able to hear all the action on 95.7 NewsRadio with Garreth MacDonald.
