Temperatures climbed in Halifax Regional Municipality and across parts of the mainland, breaking, in one case, a century-old record.
According to data collected by 95.7’s weather specialist, Allister Aalders, several areas reported the hottest temperatures on Oct. 6 in many years. He said that a ridge of high pressure is drawing in unseasonably mild air across Nova Scotia.
At Halifax Stanfield International Airport, the heat smashed a record first set in 2005. According to Environment Canada, it was 29.4 C on Monday, a 5.4-degree difference from the previous record.
Data has been collected at the airport since 1871.
In 1946, temperatures climbed in Halifax Shearwater Area, but on Monday, the heat of 28.5 C, broke the previous 27.8 C record.
It wasn’t just Nova Scotia; several other Maritime provinces were faced with summer-like temperatures.
“P.E.I., I believe, it was they recorded their hottest October day on record yesterday,” Aalders said.
Other records broken across Nova Scotia include:
- Port Hawkesbury: 25.3 C, previously 23.5 set in 1985
- Truro: 24.7 C, previously 24.4 set in 2023
- Kentville: 30.3 C, previously 26.1 set in 1926
- Kejimkujik National Park: 29.3 C, previously 25.0 C set in 1974
- Greenwood: 30.1 C, previously 25.6 C in 1914
High heat increasingly common
Several areas had records smashed on Monday, including by several degrees. Two areas also reached as warm as 30 C, double the normal maximum temperature for this time of year, Canada’s weather agency shows.
According to the Climate Atlas of Canada, an organization showcasing climate data from the University of Winnipeg, days above 30 C will be increasingly common for the east coast cities. Its data shows that between 2021 and 2050, there is likely to be 3.4 more days where heat climbs above that threshold in Halifax.
For Dartmouth, it notes there will be closer to 4.7 days where 30 C is the norm.
Further north in the province, like Kentville, the organization predicts there will be 12.4 days where it is expected to be above 30 C.
