Mooseheads edged 4–2 by Regiment at Scotiabank Centre

The Halifax Mooseheads fell 4–2 to the Newfoundland Regiment on Saturday night at Scotiabank Centre.

Caylen Blake opened the scoring for the Mooseheads at 9:34 of the first period, taking a pass from behind the Regiment net and deking goaltender Mikus Vecvanags before sending a backhand shot into the net. Amelio Santini and Carlos Händel picked up assists on the play.

The Regiment responded with two unanswered goals to close out the frame. Benjamin Veitch scored his second of the season to tie the game, followed by a power-play marker from Louis-François Bélanger, who pounced on a loose puck and fired it past Owen Bresson to give Newfoundland the lead.

Oleg Kulebiakin tied the game 4:39 into the second period, blasting a one-timer off a pass from Owen Phillips into a wide-open net. But Liam Arsenault restored the Regiment’s lead minutes later, tipping an Emile Perron shot past Bresson. The goal stood after a brief video review.

Blake Pilgrim-Edwards sealed the win for Newfoundland with an empty-net goal late in the third.

With the loss, the Mooseheads fall to 7-4-0 on the season.

Despite the defeat, Mooseheads goaltender Owen Bresson earned first-star honours with a 30-save performance. Regiment forwards Arsenault and Maddex Marmulak were named second and third stars, respectively.

The Mooseheads return to action Saturday, Oct. 25, when they host the Cape Breton Eagles at Scotiabank Centre.

Puck drop is set for 7 p.m., with live coverage on 95.7 NewsRadio. Garreth MacDonald hosts the pre-game show starting at 6:30 p.m.
