Today marks two years since a house fire claimed the lives of the seven Barho children in Halifax.
The blaze tore through Ebraheim and Kawthar's family home on Spryfield's Quartz Drive in the early morning hours of February 19, 2019.
Their seven children, Ahmad, 14; Rola, 12; Mohamad, 9; Ola, 8; Hala, 3; Rana, 2 and three-month-old Abdullah were all killed in the fire.
Kawthar escaped with only minor injuries, but Ebraheim suffered serious injuries trying to save the lives of his children.
The incident shook the community to its core as thousands of mourners attended a public funeral service for the children, days later.
The tragedy also made national headlines as an online fundraiser set up by the HEART Society has raised nearly $730,000 for the family
The HEART Society sponsored the Barho family to bring them to Canada in 2017 from Syria as refugees.
In a Facebook post on Friday morning, HEART wrote that the society continues to grieve and thanked the public for continued support.
“For those who have inquired as to how their parents are doing, Ebraheim was discharged from hospital in the early summer and now lives at home where he continues his long recovery,” the society wrote. “He continues to amaze us with his hard work and determination.”
“Ebraheim and Kawthar would like to thank all of the people who continue to keep them in their thoughts and prayers two years after the tragic fire that took the lives of their seven children.”
In September 2019, Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency announced they weren't able to identify the cause of the deadly fire.
