Cop charged with extortion facing restrictions

A Halifax Regional Police officer facing extortion charges has been ordered to stay away from a couple of convicted drug dealers.

Cst. Jeffrey Buchanan must have no contact with Shawn Banfield and Donya Delaney.

Court documents allege Cst. Buchanan threatened Banfield into paying him more than $5000 last week.

The Herald is also reporting the police officer has been handed a $164 ticket for allegedly using a cellphone while driving his police car – which even police are not allowed to do.

Buchanan has pleaded not guilty to the offence.
