Bridge shutdown causes headaches for drivers

Drivers on the morning commute had more than the rain to deal with on Monday.

The MacKay Bridge was shut down over the weekend for scheduled repair work, and plans to re-open the span at five o’clock Monday morning hit a weather snag.

The new bridge was closed to traffic Friday evening. It’s part of the Bridge Commission’s multi-million dollar repair project this summer on the span.

The scheduled reopening at five however was delayed. The Bridge Commission’s Alison MacDonald says it was because of the rain over the weekend and Monday morning.

“The major project that we were accomplishing this weekend is replacing an expansion joint on the MacKay Bridge,” she said. “It was a success that has been done. But it was putting everything back together that the weather delayed.”

The bridge re-opened at seven. There were traffic backups because of the delay, but nothing too out of the usual for a Monday morning drive to work.

At least one more weekend closure is planned this summer along with occasional weekend lane shutdowns for paving.
