Fee hike threatens Upass program

The discount transit service for Halifax university students may be in jeopardy because of a timing glitch.
The U-Pass program offers students unlimited access to regular transit services for an annual fee.
Contracts have expired with several local universities, and Metro Transit wants to renew – at a higher price.
But local student leaders tell CBC, they can’t raise the price without first putting it to students in a referendum – and there’s no time to do that before the contract has to be renewed.
Councillor Sue Uteck says she wants to keep the U-Pass program active, but without the fee increase, the city will have to absorb a loss of about half a million dollars.
