Neighbours on edge after Highfield Park murder

Investigators say there’s no indication the 27-year old man delivering a pizza in the north Dartmouth neighbourhood Saturday night was robbed after he was shot dead in an entryway.
And considering it was only the second day on the job for Donald Chad Smith, some of the people in the Highfield Park neighbourhood Monday are thinking there’s more to the situation than a random act of violence.
“There’s definitely people that know (what it was about),” says a young man walking along Joseph Young Street.
“I don’t think it was a random act, just they seen him, they wanted to rob him. There’s definately a story behind it. People don’t get shot for nothing.”
Another neighbour says people don’t want to talk because they are afraid. “Who would want to rat out somebody and possibly be the next target? There’s that fear that the police can’t protect them from it. Even though they say To Serve and Protect, who are they serving and protecting, really.”
Another man says police are doing all they can. He says there are officers patrolling the Highfield Park area by car, motorcycle and bicycle. “It’s a well patrolled area (but) they have Halifax and Dartmouth to patrol. They only have so many guys. What can you really do, seriously.”
Police are still hoping for a break in the case. They are asking for people to come forward if they have any information about the shooting death, or the call to the pizza place that led to the murder. It was made from a payphone on Highfield Park Drive, between Joseph Young Street and Burnside Drive. That was around 8:45 p.m. Saturday night.
