CAO gets to work on Auditor General’s recommendations

The cash for concerts scandal was front and center at City Hall for the second day in a row on Wednesday. HRM’s Audit and Finance Committee met to once again discuss the Auditor General’s report into the scandal.
In the end, the City’s CAO Richard Butts said he will get to work right away forming a team that will begin implementing the AG’s 52 recommendations. Butts cautions this process will take time. He says it could be up to two years before all recommendations are in place.
“It’s a big complex report,” he says. “It will take time to implement.”
He says recommendations surrounding municipal relations with external partners are the most complex.
Some other changes will be easier to enforce. Butts says a handful of those recommendations will be implemented almost immediately but he’s not specifying which ones.
“I couldn’t say which ones are the absolute priorities now. They’re all a priority. We want to get them done,” Butts says. “They’ll all get done as quickly as possible for that given priority. So the fact that one may take longer, it will take the amount of time it requires. All of them will be implemented aggressively, but to the extent that they can be in a time frame.”
Butts says he will check in with the Audit and Finance Committee every two months to update them on the progress.
