Big third period leads Canucks over Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, OH (NEWS1130) – Cody Hodgson and Alex Burrows scored third period goals and Cory Schneider turned away Maksim Mayorov on a penalty shot as the Vancouver Canucks edged the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2.
The Canucks started off slow and nearly nine minutes in Cam Atkinson put the Blue Jackets up 1-0 with his first career NHL goal.
It took until almost the 12-minute mark before the Canucks finally registered a shot on Steve Mason as they were outshot 11-2 in the opening period. The only other shot they had came when Chris Higgins tipped a Manny Malholtra shot past Mason and into the net to tie it up 1-1.
The score stayed tied at one for most of the second period, but with a minute-and-a-half left in the middle frame Vinny Prospal gave the Blue Jackets their lead back with a wraparound goal.
Columbus had a terrific chance to extend their lead just under a minute into the third period. Chris Tanev was caught covering the puck in the crease, which gave the Blue Jackets a penalty shot. Maksim Mayorov’s attempt was stopped by the Canuck netminder as he got a shoulder on it, knocking it over the glass.
A minute after the Blue Jackets’ failed penalty shot the Canucks drew even. Dan Hamhuis made a nice pass to Hodgson who made no mistake in scoring his first of the season to tie the game 2-2.
The Canucks got their third powerplay of the game midway through the final period and in typical fashion Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin set up down low and then fed Alex Burrows in front, who banged in his own rebound. That goal proved to be the game winner.
The win is the first of the season for Vancouver. The Canucks have picked up three of a possible four points to begin the season.
The Canucks’ next game is Thursday in Philadelphia. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
