Electricity restored after bird knocks out power to thousands (update)

By Dave Heintzman

Power has been restored to thousands of Halifax Regional Municipality residents who woke up to no electricity Friday morning.

Shortly after 6 a.m., the lights went out for 10,000 customers in the Hammonds Plains area.

Nova Scotia Power's outage map listed cause as “wildlife interference.”

“In this case it was a bird that flew into a piece of equipment which caused the trip in the outage,” explains a spokesperson for the utility, Patti Lewis.

Lewis says crews were able to quickly, and safely restore power to the affected customers within three hours.
