Light snow Wednesday triggers special weather statement

By Meghan Groff

Today's light snow has triggered a special weather statement from Environment Canada for central Nova Scotia, including the Halifax area.

Meteorologists are expecting about 2 cm of snow to accumulate on grassy surfaces, but say some spots could see up to 5 cm.

“The snow should remain fairly wet in nature as temperatures remain near freezing today,” the weather advisory said. “The snow may be mixed with freezing drizzle at times in areas away from the coast.”

This could cause some tricky driving conditions, particularly on bridge decks that can freeze before other road surfaces.

“See snow, go slow,” Environment Canada said.

Halifax Regional Police are also asking drivers to give themselves extra time today and reminding them that clearing snow off all vehicle windows is required by law.

“Before heading out, take the time to clear all the snow off your entire vehicle, including the roof. Leaving snow on your vehicle can be dangerous to other road users, especially if it blows off in slabs,” said police in a news release.

They say driving conditions could change throughout the day and that may mean reducing your speed.

“When the roads are slippery, a vehicle's stopping distance increases so allow extra space between you and the road user ahead,” HRP said.

“When approaching a red light or stop sign, begin stopping earlier to help prevent sliding into the intersection. Keep a watchful eye out for other road users, pedestrians and cyclists.”

The forecast is calling for a chance of showers on both Thursday and Friday, with rain or snow arriving Friday night and lingering into Saturday.
