Leek leads Islanders past Mooseheads with hat trick

The Halifax Mooseheads fell 5-1 to the Charlottetown Islanders on Sunday afternoon.
Charlottetown opened the scoring in the first period as Nathan Leek slipped the puck past Nick Cirka on the penalty kill, prompting a rain of teddy bears from the crowd during the Islanders’ teddy bear toss night.
In the second period, William Shields fired a short-side shot into the Mooseheads’ net on the power play. Connor MacPherson put Halifax on the board at 6:59 while shorthanded, stripping Islanders forward Ross Campbell of the puck before beating Donald Hickey on a breakaway. Marcus Kearsey responded at 8:59 to restore the two-goal lead for Charlottetown.
Leek scored twice in the third period to secure his second career hat trick and the win for the Islanders.
With the loss, Halifax falls to 15-12-1-1 on the season.
Leek earned first star of the game with three goals and an assist. Second star went to Kearsey with a goal and two assists, while third star was awarded to Hickey for his 24 saves for Charlottetown.
Halifax will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 17, when they face the Saint John Sea Dogs at TD Station.
