Councillors nix permit parking plan for downtown core

A proposal to allow commuters to rent street parking in the downtown core has been shot down.
Regional council was considering replacing about 300 meter spaces in the areas around Citadel High with permit-only spaces that commuters could own for $30 to $40 a month.
Metro Halifax reports the permits would have generated $100,000 to be invested in sustainable transportation, and staff said it could encourage more people to leave their cars at home.
But councillors said there wasn’t enough consultation with local businesses and residents, and said the limited number of spaces to lead to an “inherently unfair” lottery system.
Coun. Mary Wile also pointed out that residents in some outlying areas don’t have bus service and have no choice but to drive.
