Taser-use down, according to VPD

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Police in Vancouver are not as quick to use the taser as they used to be.

An audit shows the number of times the taser was used on a suspect dropped from 86 in 2007 to 33 in 2008.  The report only goes to the first quarter of 2009, when the taser was used four times.

“Taser-use continues to decline fairy significantly. I believe the report shows eight uses so far this year,” says Cst. Jana McGuinness.

Tasers were deployed, but not used, in another 80 cases in 2007, 67 times in 2008.

McGuinness says media attention, training and guidelines on when the taser can be deployed may be behind the trend.
