Mayor and council getting more money

The mayor and councillors will be taking home larger pay packets next month.
Peter Kelly is in for a four per cent hike.
The mayor is getting a four per cent increase. He’ll make just shy of $145,000.
Councillors will get an increase of 1.5 per cent, a little over $72,000 total.
The pay cheques determined by a formula, looking at other city councils.
Downtown councillor Dawn Sloane says she thinks the pay is fair.
“When you look across the country at different places such as London, Hamilton, Surrey, B.C., Laval, Quebec, Brampton, it shows in the formula that that’s the way it should be,” she said. “People think that we just go to meetings on Tuesdays and show up to cut cake and give little speeches or something, but there’s a lot more to this job.”
They mayor says HRM’s formula is designed so that our mayor and council will never be the highest or lowest paid in the country.
The raises kick in November 1.
