City reminds homeowners to shovel sidewalks

HRM is cracking down on sidewalk snow clearing slackers. By-law officials are investigating over 100 complaints about sidewalks not being properly cleared of snow and ice.
Residents who do not have a municipally provided sidewalk are obligated to clear the path in front of their property. Typically, these areas include peninsular Halifax, Armdale, Purcell’s Cove and Spryfield.
By-law enforcement coordinator Jeff Rogers says they want to remind folks to start clearing as the snow accumulates. He says there’s nothing more difficult than trying to navigate a snow-filled, icy sidewalk, especially for the elderly, visually impaired or people pushing strollers.
The by-law requires property owners to clear sidewalks within 12 hours of a snowfall or six hours after daylight. At least three feet of bare pavement must be visible.
Fines for not shoveling start at $225. Repeat offenders can be fined for the total amount of having a contractor come to do the snow removal.
