VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Three local teams in action this weekend. One sits and waits.
NHL
The Canucks are trying to conclude a six-game road trip with a third consecutive win and prove they’ve shaken off their supposed Stanley Cup final hangover. Vancouver battles the Ducks in Anaheim tonight, a team looking to snap a six-game slide.
The power play has been the key to the Canucks latest success. Vancouver is 7 for 12 with the man advantage over its last two games.
Daniel Sedin has five points in the last two games – three coming on the power play, increasing his season total to a team-high 20. Daniel has eight goals and 10 assists in his last 10 games against Anaheim.
Puck drop is at 7:30 pm.
The Canucks will return home to host the New York Islanders at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

WHL
The Vancouver Giants will pay tribute to the 1946-47 Vancouver White Spots junior team on Saturday night, by wearing replica uniforms when they take on the Kelowna Rockets at 7 p.m. at the Pacific Coliseum. The White Spots played in the the Pacific Coast Junior Hockey League and were owned and managed by Nat Bailey himself.
On Sunday, the Giants host the Prince Geroge Cougars at 5 p.m.
CFL
The BC Lions will have two practice sessions this weekend on Friday and Saturday morning at BC Place. Players are off Sunday and all eyes will be on the Western Semi-Final game in Edmonton. The Eskimos host the Calgary Stampeders at Commonwealth Stadium. Kick-off is just after 1:30 p.m.
The early game is the Eastern Semi-Final where the two-time defending Grey Cup Champion Montreal Alouettes host the Hamilton Tiger Cats.
The next Lions home game is the Western Final on Sunday, Nov. 20 at BC Place at 1:30 pm. The team will battle the winner between the Eskimos and Stamps.
The winning team to emerge between the Alouettes and Ti-Cats will travel to Winnipeg to face the Blue Bombers in the Eastern Final also on Sunday, Nov. 20.
CIS FOOTBALL
The UBC Thunderbirds football team hasn’t won a game of any kind at McMahon Stadium in Calgary since 2000. The two teams have a big contest on the line tonight, the Canada West Final.
The Dinos are seeking their fourth consecutive conference championship and are 8-0 in Hardy Cup games at home.
The ‘Birds, who beat Saskatchewan 27-22 last Saturday in a Canada West semifinal after a surprising 6-2 regular season, lost a close one in Calgary in September. But, the last time these teams battled at the end of October, UBC upset the visitors 36-23 at Thunderbird Stadium.
